Obituary

Gale Sandler, 90, (born Gale Berkman), son of Clara and Sam Sandler and loving husband of the late Bertha Sandler, died peacefully in Madison, Wisconsin. He is survived by beloved daughters Renee Sandler (John Cary) and Maureen Becker (Larry) and his 4 cherished grandchildren Kyle, Claire, Austin, and Amelia. Gale grew up in Chicago during the Depression and told hilarious stories, complete with Yiddish accent, about working with his buddies at Hillman’s grocery. As a kid, he loved to look at maps and learn about history. He served bravely as an infantry soldier in the Pacific theater in World War II. Back in Chicago, he earned a BS in accounting from Roosevelt University and met a beautiful woman from Paris named Bertha. They married in 1951. Both of them enjoyed the stability in their lives after somewhat difficult childhoods and were profoundly influenced by their respective experiences in World War II. They were active for decades in the Jewish War Veterans and in a local Holocaust organization, and spent many happy hours playing cards with friends. When Bertha died, after they had been married for 52 years, Gale had to learn many new things. In 2011, he moved to Madison and lived long enough to see the Chicago Cubs finally win the championship.
